The story Charles, is about how a little boy lied about a kid in his school. Charles was written by Shirley Jackson. The theme of this story is how a little boy like the main character, Laurie, would lie for or make up some crazy story all for attention.
Throughout the story, Laurie's mother is the narrator. She tells the story from her point of view and tells exactly what happened. The plot of the story starts off as soon as Laurie gets home from his first day of school. Laurie starts talking to his mother and quickly with out hesitation, he mentions a boy named "Charles" that acts very bad in class. He announces that Charles is very fresh to the teacher on his first day of school, and with out another word, he leaves his mother with many questions and walks away. I think the author really "zooms in" on the next part. She describes how over the next few days, Laurie has a new story about Charles everyday.
The story ends with Charles being brought up with a teacher. Laurie's Mother is at Parent Teacher Conference alone. While she is speaking to the teacher, Laurie's mother brings up Charles much like how Laurie did.
Laurie's mother is quickly told by the teacher that there was no Charles in Kindergarten. This proves my theme of the story, Laurie lied to his mother, most likely for attention. There is one major factor of proving my point and theme of Charles. Most children Laurie's age don't usually tell lies. Most children want and love a lot of attention, and would do almost anything for it.
